I was only focused on coins from the time I started hunting in 1975 until about around 2000 when I got my minelab and started hunting the fields.

Back in the late 70s I lived in Tennessee and found a lot of coins as well as non coin items. I would keep all of the neat and unusual non coin stuff and toss it in bags like the ones I posted in the Photo Gallery forum.

When we moved to Indiana in the early 80s I had access to coin shops and got to know the owners of the one we had locally back then.

I still liked coins better so I would take the better non coin finds and trade them for coins at the coin shop. I must have traded 20 items for silver dollars back then. Common Morgan silver dollars were worth about $7 - $10 at the time.

I think I did pretty good in the trades but never really knew. Then one day I found out (a couple of decades later) that one of the things I traded for a silver dollar was a brass star I found in Tennessee. It was about the size of a half dollar and had a brass outer ring with a five point start inside of it. It turned out that it was a Confederate bridle rosette and sold for $400.

So let that be a lesson. If you don't know what something is post it here and let our members take a crack at the ID. A short post could possibly save you hundreds of dollars.

Too bad about that star. Would have been nice to know what it was worth at the time. Would have been great if the internet were available to help you ID it then. Oh well...Maybe you have a couple items like that in your plastic bags. You should go through them and re-evaluate what you found. If you haven't already. :)

I found this online. It's close to what it was except that it was solid brass with no pattern and had a slight patina.

..Keith ...I am also a member of another forum.....something to do with older detectors....LOL...Well we was posting some of our better finds and this other member posted a Brass Star with the Number 4 in the Middle and it had a great patina......I immediately knew that it was either Republic of Texas or Texas Confederate....cause I saw one around 2005 when My friend Van showed me one that he dug out of an old homestead in the Houston Area......Well this got the fire lit under my buddy and he did some research and it turned out to be from a Confederate Texas Battalion ...4th regiment ...it turned out to be worth around $2000.00 and he had it in his ....so...so ....maybe junk pile......LOL.......Joe

That would have been an expensive lesson if he had traded it for a silver dollar
