...another old padlock found. 8 Years, 4 Months ago
I pulled this out of a deep hole next to a very large tree. It was near a church that bordered an old railroad line, (Lakeshore and Michigan Southern RR). It was a corroded blob. I wire brushed it and gave it a good oil soak. I painted it and fashioned a "pick" out of a wire clothes hanger. Eventually, I got the mechanism to work. I can lock it and open it with the pick. I sent pictures of it into the National Archives and received a nice response back from them. It is a "Pancake" style that was popular in the early 1900's. For obvious reasons, I thought it was military related but as it turns out, it is not. These were made like mine with "U.S. Army", some with "U.S. Navy", while others just had a floral design. The shackle is stamped "Made in USA".
